I made it!

My breakfast: blueberry pancake

Well, I made it! I need to pat myself at the back! I started riding my bike in April. In the first few rides from work, I had to stop twice to rest. It is only 5 miles. Today, I rode my bike for 15 miles without stopping!

As for the swim, I cannot remember when was the last time I really swim laps. I stayed with my breast stroke today and did better. I did not have to stop long to catch my breath! Special thanks to Christina who was injured and cannot do the race. She was there to cheer me till I left the pool!

All in all, everything went according to plan. It took awhile before I got into the water. But once I was in it, I was fine. I let a few swimmers pass. I did not feel pressured to swim faster. Next year, I will use the freestyle. I have one year to learn!

Transition 1 was smooth. I got out of there without a challenge.

The first leg of biking was a bit off. I was trying to drink and almost lost control of the bike. The ride on Idelia was not as fast as I planned. I kept behind a gentleman because I am not sure that I can ride faster after I pass him. This time, I did not get the cramps! But at one point, my left toes were numb. I do not know what happened. Thanks to the police officers and volunteers, the ride was a piece of cake, relatively!

Transition 2 was not bad till I was running out. I almost missed the pad for the timing chip.

The first part of the run was hard. It was becoming hot. It was the first time for me to pour water on my head. I am glad that I had my running belt with water! As I approach the finish line, I noticed a lady who is 63 years old. They wrote our age on our left calf! I said to her that I wanted to be like her when I become 63 years old. Then we chatted a bit. I found out that this is her 44th sprint triathlon. She started when she was 56 years old. She competes in about 6-8 per year. I let her cross the finish line first. Afterwards, she told me that her goal is to compete 100 by the time she is 70!! She is my hero!!

Overall, I love it. This race gave me so much confidence about myself. Yes, I completed medical school, went through residency training and worked in a rural hospital for 3 years. But I feel that this a tougher physical and mental test. Just wish I know my completion time. I checked many times and it is not out yet! Yes, I will be patient. I came this far already :)

Training Week 8

September 5, 2010 Sunday, Rest Day: Coach Andie asked us to write a "Dear Diary" entry. It should be written as if the event is over. So here is my entry:

September 12, 2010

Sunday
1 pm

Dear Diary,

I made it! I completed my first official Sprint Triathlon. It took me awhile to decide to sign up. I am glad that I did. I am now confident to tell anyone that once we set our mind to do something, it can be accomplished!

I slept well last night. I slept like a baby. Once I hit the pillow, I just fell into a deep and restful sleep! My eyes opened at 4:55 am, 5 minutes before my set time. I felt rested. I was ready to give my best shot!

Breakfast was usual, just like what I had for the simulation race. I had a blueberry pancake. The coffee was good too. Since I already prepared my racing gears the day before, I left the house on time. It was 6 am.

I got to Rio Rancho Library at 6:30 am. I had plenty of time to find a space to park. With my bike and traveling bag, I took my time and got to our reserved space.

My planned completion time for the swim was 15 minutes. I got into the pool at 9am. The water temperature was just perfect! I leisurely swam the first 4 lanes. When I got to the 5th lane, I increased my speed. My arms and legs were strong. My breathing rhythm and strokes were well synchronized. I kept going from one lane to another. Every push off from the wall was forceful. It propelled me into a seamless glide. By the time I got to the ladder to exit, I surprise myself with a completion time of 13:30.

The trip to T1 was uneventful. I put my bike jersey on, then my sunglasses, helmet, socks and shoes. As I pushed the bike out, I grabbed the gel and gave myself a “shot”, just like what we did in training. Then I let the Gatorade bring the fuel to every cell in my body.

I took my time and slowly climbed the hill until I got to Idelia Street. The cops were at the intersection at Northern, so there was no wasted time. I was able to cruise through the rolling hills of Idelia at a cadence of 90 bpm. Going through the round about at Idelia and Iris was a piece of cake, again thanks to the law enforcement officers.

The short climb to Paseo del Volcan was easy. I guess I got my “second wind” after that. I kept climbing the hill until I past the Santa Ana Star Center. I was able to hydrate myself during that part of the ride.

After King and Unser, it was all downhill. The cadence was right, the speed was fast and my legs were strong. Going up Unser to Northern was a gentle climb. I made the turn into Northern still going strong.

As I approached the transition area, the cheers from the spectators were just as loud as it could be. It was a big shot of adrenaline to my systems! Thank you!

After I removed my helmet, I put on my running shoes, grabbed my water belt, race number, and gel. I was gone in no time.

I walked for 2 minutes, got some gel in and some Gatorade. For the rest of the run, I was able to keep up with the 1:1 run/walk cycle. With my own water supply, I stayed fresh throughout the run.

When I approached the finish line, my body come up with a “third wind” and propelled me right into the line where the photographer took my very first official sprint Triathlon finish picture! Yes, it was picture prefect!

Then, I found the best surprise of the day. My completion time was 2:10:10!!!

September 6, 2010 Monday, Labor Day: it is supposed to be a biking day, but with my right calf injury, I decided to walk. Also, since the urge to use my camera has been great lately, I brought my camera along.

September 7, 2010 Tuesday, Swim Day: I did not go to Rio Rancho. I went to Defined Fitness instead. So here's the plan for the swim: Lane 1 and 2, easy breast stroke to warm up; Lane 3 and 4, faster breast stroke; Lane 5 and 6, half lane breast stroke and half lane freestyle; Lane 7 and 8, freestyle. I will go to Defined Fitness again tomorrow to practice that.

September 8, 2010 Wednesday, Swim Day: tried the new plan, not better, so I am staying with breast stroke all the way.

September 9, 2010 Thursday, Rest Day: must needed rest! The right shoulder is sore!

September 10, 2010 Friday, Rest Day: Soba Noodles, Popcorn, "Eat, Pray, Love"!

September 11. 2010 Saturday, Rest Day: The walk and picture taking last Monday was addictive! So, I did it again!
Foothills by Spain and High Desert

Training Week 7

August 29, 2010 Sunday
Rest day! I had headaches for 2 nights in a row. My body is screaming for a time out! You got it!

August 30, 2010 Monday
Supposed to be a bike day. I am taking the day off. I was planning to wear my new neon colored jersey, but I will save it for Saturday's simulation! I will bring the bike to the shop today. Also, massage time!!!
August 31, 2010 Tuesday, Swim Day: We met at the Rio rancho Aquatic Center. I wanted to swim half freestyle and half breast stroke. But it just ruined my breathing. So, stayed with the breast stroke. Before the meet, I drove the bking route again. This time, I took some pictures.
Loma Colorado, the beginning, uphill!
Idelia, rolling hills!

Santa Ana Star Center, half way!

September 1, 2010 Wednesday, Run Day: Well, this is probably a low point in the preparation for the race. I am tired. I could hardly get through the day at work. I do not want to prepare meals either. So, I went to Yummi House for Cha-chiang Noodle for lunch. For supper, I went to Sweet Tomatoes. Yes, I am running low on budget. May have to live on instant noodles next week :( I will go to Defined Fitness tomorrow for the swim. I will need to practice a combo of breast and freestyle.

September 2. 2010 Thursday, Swim Day: I tried the combo, it does not work. I lost my breathing rhythm. So, I am running out of time to learn new tricks. I will stick with the breast stroke!!!!

September 3, 2010 Friday, Rest Day: Aaaaaaah, rest! Tomorrow is my unofficial triathlon! We are doing the whole thing! Well, I am ready. I can finish!
Transition gear

September 4, 2010 Saturday, Race Simulation: Well, I completed my unofficial first sprint Triathlon. 400 yards of swimming, 15 miles of biking and 3 miles of running! Lessons learned: 1. Once we set our mind to do something, it can be done! 2. I need to learn how to swim freestyle. 3. I need to learn how to get the water bottle in the bike and return it to the holder. 4. Pull up the zipper of the bike jersey half way. 5. For the first section of biking, take it real easy. 6. I need my water belt when I run.

I made it!

Training Week 6

August 22, 2010 Sunday
Swim day. I went to Defined Fitness to try what I have been learning from the Total Immersion DVD. I love it! Yes, I need more time and patience. It shall come!

‎8-23-10 Mon, bike day: biking to work, save gas :0) need to work on cadence, 90 beats per minute!
August 24, 2010 Tuesday. Group Swim Day. This is where we meet regularly. This is also the race day pool. That is one advantage of joining the training group. We practice at the competition pool! I shall try my new skills today. Face my fear! Face my fear of the deeper part of the pool!
‎8-25-2010 Wednesday, run day: 30 minutes around the neighborhood, 2:1, right hip sore but made it!

August 26, 2010 Thursday, swim day: Well, I tried the drills from Total Immersion regarding breathing. I believe it helps. I need more time to practice, but I think we are running out of time. Countdown: 17 days to go!

August 27, 2010 Friday, TGIF!!! Rest day :0)

‎8-28-10 Saturday, BRICK: Santa Ana Casino to Jemez Dam 12 miles round trip, plus 3 miles run! 1:34:43 !!!!!

Training Week 5

August 15, 2010 Sunday
Supposed to be a run day. But I have to be at the airport at 7 am. I was planning to get up at 4:30 am and go my run. The bike ride yesterday was a killer. I was exhausted. So, will get some rest :)

August 16, 2010 Monday, Rest day! Another rest? yes, today is golf day with Paul and Kai :)

August 17, 2010 Tuesday, Swim day: bought a new toy, pull buoy. It helped me float my lower half! I was able to take a few good breaths :) Unfortunately, I don't think they will allow that in the race. Didn't go to the group meet but did swim for 35 minutes at Defined Fitness! I will need a swim coach!

August 18, 2010 Wednesday
Bike day. I decided to ride my new bike to work. Yes, road bikes are different. With the thinner tires, I have to be careful with my balance. The fear of falling is still there. Let me bring it out to the open and see if I can desensitize myself. I was very conservation in my ride today, even walked the bike a few times in busy intersections. I will get used to it. As far as cleats, that is a different story :) New record: 35 minutes to home!

‎8-19-10 swim day: done :) I got the feel of it. Yes, patience and more practice!

‎8-20-10 Rest, rest, rest !!!

August 21, 2010 Saturday, Brick day
This is my very first brick. We went to the Lovelace Westside Hospital. We went west on McMahon, north on Unser, east on Cabazon and south on Golf Course. A total of 5 miles for one loop. We did a total of 10 miles biking and then 2.8 miles of running. My time was 1:24:55. Well, that's another time in the record. My first brick PR :) The run was challenging. I tried to do 3:1, but later changed to 1:1. So the question now is: during training, should I stay with 3:1? I think I should. I found out that Total Immersion Swimming class is coming to town. The sign up fee is $500! Wow! Well, I also found a Bike Repair 101 class. this one is cheaper at $85. I am sure about that! I need to learn more about the bike to make be more comfortable when I am doing longer rides. The next event will be the "Day of the Tread" on October 24, 2010. Then I am aiming for the Albuquerque Century in June of 2011. After that will be the Bike Train tour of Taiwan in September 2011 to celebrate my 50th birthday. Busy and ambitious :)

Training Week 4

August ‎8, 2010 Sunday, Run Day
3 miles, 39:14. I know what is causing my aching hip. It is the IT band. So got 2 new toys, foam roller and lock lace for my shoes :)

August 9, 2010 Monday, Swim Day
It is supposed to be bike day. At first I decided to make it a rest day. I realize that, at my age, I need 2 days off per week :) At this point of the training, I know I can finish it!But towards late afternoon, I could not resist the temptation to swim. So I went to Defined Fitness and swam for half an hour. I could take 4 breaths with the freestyle. Yes, a little improvement!!!!!!!

‎August10, 2010 Tuesday, REST DAY!
That says it all! I decided to take an extra day off!

August 11, 2010 Wednesday, Run day
I went to the dam on Juan Tabo and ran for 30 minutes. I used my interval timer and set it at 3 minutes of running and 1 minute of walking. The initial run was uphill. I kept reminding myself what coach Andi said last Sunday, "Swing your arms! Swing your arms!"
On the return, it was downhill. Again, I reminded myself of what she said, "Feel like you are falling forward. Lighten your steps!" And I did!
I am glad to live in such a beautiful part of the country. The clouds were marvelous! As the sun came out, the clouds changed color. No one can paint a better picture.

August 12, 2010 Thursday, Swim Day
Exactly one month before the race. I timed the 400 yards swim with breast stroke today. It is 19:13. So the question is: should I stick with the breast stroke, try to swim more efficiently or really really learn the freestyle. It is time to ask the coach!

August 13, 2010 Friday, REST DAY
So coach Andie said I should keep practicing my freestyle. I will also add one more swim session during the weekend. I sent an email to Defined Fitness to get a lesson. 30 days....can do!

August 14, 2010 Saturday, Bike Day: 16 miles, down Tramway from San Bernadino, east on Lomas, made a loop, out on Indian School, up Tramway, east on Rover, made another loop, out on Menaul, up Tramway, east on Candelaria, one more loop, out on Mongomery, up on Tramway, east on Spain, one final loop, out on Academy, up ...

Training Week 3

Aug 1, 2010 Bike day: 18 miles, hill work! Got stucked again in my cleats, FELL :( need to get a cadence counter! My thighs are aching now! But, able to walk :) Running tomorrow.

Aug 2, 2010 Mon: Run day, 35 minutes, 3:2. Sweat! Felt great! By noon, I was ready to call it a day!

Aug 3, 2010 Tue, Swim day: timed 100 yards breast stroke, 2:55. Really need to work on my breathing for the free style, otherwise the other parts of the stroke will not follow :) Can do! Can do!

Aug 4, 2010 Wed Run day: did repeats today, 3:1.5, right hip sore, ran on packed dirt, still sore, too much "frog leg" kick yesterday :0 well, will work on breathing tomorrow! relax, float and breathe!!!

Aug 5, 2010 Thu, swim day: 650 meters, did 3 strokes and breath, not there yet, but better. It is all mental, just like the cleats for the bike. I decided to change back to cage. The salesperson was kind enough to give me one for free! He just won my business!

Aug 6, 2010 Fri, rest day: TGIF !!!!!!!!!!!!! It will nice to have a massage :)

August 7, 2010 Saturday, Bike Day: Original plan was to bike up and down Tramway. I got a call from Ray yesterday and he invited me to ride with him. So, plan change :) Yes, will get a massage this afternoon!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 weeks into training!

Training Week 2

July 25, 2010 Sunday: Swim day: Aaaaaaaaaaaah! I think I will survive! 3 strokes, right arm extended, left arm on leg, turn to side, kick 6 times. I love this drill. So, a small step forward :)))

July 26, 2010 Monday, Rest Day: Rest day! I got the hitch from Uhaul yesterday. Today, I am going for the bike rack. Got to save my back! It is worth every penny :)

July 27, 2010 Tuesday, Swim Day: Swim day: coach Andie was nice enough to come early and work with me. We spent time at the deeper end. I found the blue line which marked the beginning of the deeper section. I can use my breast stroke to swim in and out of the deeper section. A small progress :)

July 28, 2010 Wednesday, Run Day: 30 minutes, 3 minute run: 1 minute walk. Good sweat! Will work up to 5:1

July 29, 2010 Thursday, Swim day: will do 400 yards, 30 seconds rest between each one hundred, will time it. I guess this is a dress rehersal for the swimming part! Can do!! I slept on the couch after dining last night. The run after swim was tiring!!!! so here's a number that I can beat; 400 yards, 19 minutes using breast stroke. In the worst case scenario, if I have to use breast stroke to swim, it is still better than the 30 minutes that I predicted!!!!

July 30, 2010 Friday, rest day! I need it! My right hip is sore!

July 31, 2010 Saturday, Run Day:  30 minutes, run/walk 3:2. I m tired. I m done for the day!

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Training Week 1

July 18, 2010 Sunday Day 1:
Biking
I was in Arcadia, California. I did not have my bike. Thank God for fitness room. I did my 30 minutes of biking while watching The British Open. My favorite player, Tiger woods, was not in contention.

July 19, 2010 Monday, Rest day.

July 20, 2010 Tuesday, Swim Day: I met the group for the first time. Andie looked different from the picture on her website. I met Chris and Deb. I had a left leg cramp, swallowed water, afraid to go to the deeper end, need to work on breathing! Bright side, 25 yards does not look that far! Debby tried to help me with my float, but finally determined that I do not have enough fat :O)

July 21, 2010 Wednesday, Bike Day: I biked to work today. I found the book by Terry Laughlun in the library, put it on hold, will pick tomorrow. Half day of work tomorrow. Need to do 1. Bike shop 2. Library . Been watching the "Total Immersion" swimming DVD. Will watch it everyday, hopefully it will help me program my brain and muscles :)
Relax and b...reath !

July 22, 2010 Thursday, Run day: We met at the Balloon Fiesta park. one mile 9:54, 9 minutes and 54 seconds! It was truly fun to train with a group. I learned some new stretches today.

July 23, 2010 Friday, Swim Day: HaHaHa, I m in big trouble! I can't float! The DVD and book did not help! I got my new bike shoes, fell and scratched my leg, but I got it! I know how to use the new shies an cleats. Now here's the other problem for tomorrows ride, the rear wheel is flat and I do not know how to change a tire! Feel like cryin...

right thigh wound

right knee wound

July 24, 2010 Saturday, Bike Day: plan A, bike at 6am, got a flat tire; plan B, bike to work place and back at 3 pm, it was raining, plan C, went to bosque and rode on the bike path! 10 miles, 50 minutes!

Introduction

I have to state a disclaimer. I am not very good at keeping my blog, meaning, I would start one and not finish it. This time, I will try my best. I am already 3 weeks into the training, so at least I know I have some materials to write!

The event is called "Patroits Triathlon". It is going to be held at Rio Rancho, New Mexico. It involves 400 yards of swimming, 15 miles of biking and 5K running ( 3 miles ).

Why triathlon?

I did 2 Half Marathons in the last year. The first one was 2009 Chips n Salsa which was held in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I finished it in 2:30:00. The second one was 2010 Phoenix Rock and Roll. I finished in 3:13:00.

Chips n Salsa Half Marathon 2009

I was aiming for a full marathon. Actually my grand goal was to do one full marathon in all 7 continents. But after 2 half marathons, I realized that with my flat feet, 13.1 miles is enough.

What inspired me? Well, before the half marathon, I came across a nurse from the office building who just completed the Duke City Half Marathon. The idea of doing one settled in my mind. Before I knew it, I signed up for a training group called Albuquerque Fit. I initially signed up for a full marathon. Half way into the training, as other life demands got into the way, I changed to half marathon.

This time, our new office manager was telling me about the triathlon that she did 2 years ago. She kept telling me to do one. Then one day in April, we rode to work together. I got a little better with the bike ride. I got a little more comfortable on the road. One thing led into another. I found the webstie of the event and a training group. When my wife said "go for it", I signed up.
